BANGKOK (UPI) — Monks escaping the military crackdown in Myanmar said they are regrouping in Thailand to prepare for more peaceful democracy demonstrations.
The monks traveled hundreds of miles from the capital of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, to a remote location along the Thai-Burma border, Voice of America reported. Once in Thailand, the monks maintained a low profile, saying they were warned that Thai officials may deport them for traveling without papers.
The struggle will go on. Now, the people are re-energizing, a Buddhist monk told a VOA reporter during a meeting at a secret location in Thailand.
Monks aren't the only ones fleeing Myanmar.
U Tun Win is a member of the Burmese parliament elected in 1990 but blocked by the military junta from taking office.
He fled at the height of the September crackdown, saying the military's attack on civilians was a signal for him that the time has come for change.
My party has been working inside for democracy and human rights for 17 years and nothing can be done in there, said U Tun. I want to see what can be done from the outside.
